Official Batik Login UNESCO Heritage List

Batik is a method of dyeing fabrics by hand, using wax to cover parts of a pattern, dyeing the exposed fabric and then dissolving the wax with boiling water. The waxed area retains its initial color, and when the wax is eliminated, the variation between the dyed and undyed areas makes the design. For centuries, batik has been both an art and a craft. In Indonesia, it is regarded as a national art form. However, patterns resembling batik can be found in the diverse countries of West Africa and Asia. In Java, batik is part of a venerable heritage, and some of the highest quality batik fabric in the world is still made there.

Origins of Batik

The word batik is of Indonesian origin and means "to dot." Where batik began is not known but is believed to have originated in the East. It is recognized to be more than 1,000 years old, and there is evidence that fabric elaborated using some method of resist dyeing was used in the early centuries AD in West African, Middle Eastern and Asian societies. It is called "resist" dyeing because the wax causes the fabric to resist the dye. This method was used, before printing, to embellish the look of fine clothing. Batik grew and became most profoundly established in Indonesia, on the island of Java in particular, where by the 13th century it was an advanced art form.

History and Culture of Batik in Indonesia

During the 17th century, the Javanese sultanate of Mataram gave batik clothing certain significant ceremonial uses. It is noted that Sultan Agung of Mataram dressed in white cotton designed with indigo blue, while his court dancers wore kain kembangan colored with a red organic dye. (Kain kembangan is created through another resist dyeing method, using stitches instead of wax to create the design.)

Batik was viewed as a proper pursuit for aristocratic ladies whose gracefully designed fabrics, based on patterns of birds and flowers, were an indication of gentility and breeding in the way that needlework was for upper-class European ladies of that time. Through the past few centuries, batik has developed into one of the major channels of expressing the sacred and social ideals of Southeast Asia. In the 20th century, the Javanese developed the copper block or cap (pronounced "chop"), forever changing the production of batik. This invention facilitated the production of excellent quality patterns and complex designs much more quickly than could have ever been done by hand. The copper block is used to apply the melted wax design in this method.

Batik Today

Today, Java continues to be known for its batik and the classic designs, refined over centuries, are still part of Javanese attire, though not many are created using the traditional technique of wax painting. Indonesian batik used in clothing generally has an elaborate design. While traditional fabric has natural tones of indigo and brown, modern batik is elaborated using more diverse dyes.

Modern-day batik, while still very much related, is quite different from the more established and conventional styles. For instance, the artist may use engraving, discharge dyeing (removing dye with bleach), stencils, diverse instruments for waxing and dyeing and different wax recipes, and she may practice on silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper or even wood and ceramics. More and more, the all-over patterns of Eastern batiks are being exchanged for artistic drawings and depictions of all kinds. These are used to make wall hangings and soft sculpture as well as decorating clothing and household objects. In the present day, this art form is being used by artisans the world over who find batik a stimulating and expressive medium to work in.

Procedure

The traditional technique for doing batik is called Batik Tulis, which is literally translated as "written batik." Basically, this method is much like drawing or painting with wax on cloth. The process consists of first drawing the design on fabric with a pencil. Next, the parts of the design that the artist does not wish to dye are covered with hot liquid wax using a canting (tjanting).

The fabric is then dyed using a cold fabric dye. Next, the wax is removed with hot water and is completely scraped off. The parts that were waxed over will have retained the original color. Then, other parts of the design are waxed and the fabric again goes into a vat of dye. The process is repeated until the design is complete. It can be repeated up to four or more times, depending on the number of colors in the design. Once the dyeing is complete, the fabric gets hung to dry. The wax is then removed with a solvent or by ironing it between pieces of paper.

Fabric and Wax Used in Batik

The only fabrics that can be used for batik are natural or vegetable fibers such as silk, cotton, wool, linen and rayon. Synthetic fibers cannot be used in batik. The technique you use will depend on the fabric you use. The coarser fabrics are best suited for large, clear designs, while intricate and complex designs require finer fabrics. The traditional recipe for wax to use in batik is a mixture of 60 percent beeswax and 40 percent paraffin. You can also use a 70 percent paraffin, 30 percent beeswax mixture. The combination you use will depend on the effect you want to create in your design. Beeswax adheres well to the fabric, while the paraffin creates a crackling effect that is characteristic of traditional batik. The more crackling you desire, the more paraffin you will need to use. However, if you use paraffin only, the wax likely will peel completely off the fabric while in the dye bath and ruin your design. (ehow.com)

Dollar of Business Google AdSense

Google AdSense is the Google program where you can host pay-per-click ads on your Website. When someone clicks an ad, you earn money. Simple as that. Is it really as easy to make money with Google AdSense as many would lead you to believe? Now that I've become heavily involved with managing Google AdSense programs for my clients, I can see it's not all play and no work.

Google AdSenseUnfortunately, a lot of people bought into the idea that there was a lot of easy money to be made and they are now finding out they aren't making nearly as much as they thought they would. Additionally, Google has a lot of prohibited practices when it comes to AdSense, and too many Webmasters are finding out they violated Google's policies after the fact - often because they never bothered to read the AdSense policies in the first place. Webmasters must not only comply with AdSense policies, but their Websites must also comply with Google's webmaster policies.

Prerequisites for Making Money with AdSense

To make money with Google AdSense you need plenty of traffic coming in to your site or there won't be anyone to click the ads. Website promotion techniques, especially search engine optimization and article marketing will bring more traffic to your site. You also need to have content that will attract the ads with the highest Pay Per Click (PPC) rate that are relevant to that content. Then, you need to lay out your web pages so the ads blend in with your site. Studies have revealed that people who visit sites that contain ads that use colors that are not in harmony with the actual Web site tend to develop "ad blindness". Meaning no matter how much traffic comes into your site, chances are no one will click the ads because they'll be ignoring them. If no one clicks, you make nothing.

Dealing with Competitors' Advertisements

If you offer products or services on your Website, the first thing you'll notice when you begin hosting PPC ads is that many of the ads are coming from your competitors. Therefore, you'll want to put ads on pages that aren't earning you any money, or do like I did and not put ads on your site until you're so busy anyway you'd rather make a few dollars off of your competitors than to continue turning business away with nothing to show for it. Google AdSense allows you to specify up to 200 URLs for sites you want to bar from placing ads on your pages. The problem is that most times you won't know the competitors are out there until their ads appear.

Google Money Making Ad Options

Google offers three ways to make money from them:
Google AdSense for Content - A variety of size and shape ads for placing in your content are available. These can be text or image ads or both - you specify what you'll allow. Ad units are full ads. Link units are simply a strip of text links that your visitors might want to click. Google allows you to put up to 3 Ad Units and 1 Link unit on each page of your Web site, provided you follow its policies - both for AdSense and for Webmasters.

Google AdSense for Search - This places a search box on your Web site. When a user enters a term and conducts a search, a search results page opens, that hosts more pay-per-click ads. You can customize the color scheme of the search results page to harmonize with your web site.

Google Referrals - Here you make money by referring visitors to use a Google product, like AdSense, AdWords, the Google Toolbar and other Google software. Just like Google AdSense for Content and AdSense for Search, Google generates the code that you paste into the desired location on your web page. You can choose from a wide variety of buttons and text links of different colors. As an example of how Google Referrals works, if someone goes to your site and clicks the link and signs up for an AdSense account, when that person earns a $100 from Google AdSense and receives a payout from Google, you'll also receive $100 for referring them. This is a great idea to me, because you can be the world's worst Google AdSense advertiser, but if an ad dynamo happens to visit your site and uses your referral link, you can make money anyway!

Google AdSense Payments

Google will not issue an AdSense payment until your earnings exceed $100. Unfortunately, there are loads of Google AdSense Forum entries about website operators who accumulated $90 or more in click through earnings only to get banned from Google and not get paid anything at all before they ever reached $100. This may be because Google doesn't take a close look to see if you're complying with their guidelines until it comes time to pay you. So yes, there's a lot more to the story than meets the eye.

Other Programs Besides AdSense

Yahoo and MSN have similar programs, although those programs aren't as well-developed as Google AdSense and there aren't as many available advertisers to display ads on your site. The fundamentals for making money are the same: You still need plenty of traffic, you still need high-paying ads, and you still need to design your site to harmonize with the ads to get people to click. Easy Ways to Increase Blog Traffic

Generating traffic is the lifeblood of your online business. Without sufficient traffic your site and blog will never accomplish their purpose. And while there are numerous pay options to generate traffic, there are an equal number of effective and free tools and approaches. Here are some great traffic generators:

1. Free Traffic Source: Forum Marketing

Forum Marketing: Share your expertise with people asking questions about your industry. In return, you’ll get a steady flow of traffic to your site. You will be the expert, after all. To ensure that you get traffic from all the time you spend answering questions, be sure to spend time on your forum marketing signature. Your signature tells other forum members who you are and how to read more about you. As you begin in forum marketing, you will want to watch out for (and completely avoid) these 8 Common Forum Marketing Mistakes.

2. Free Traffic Source: Blog Commenting

Blog Commenting: Very similar to forum marketing, blog commenting only differs in the platform it uses. Instead of being in a public forum, the commenting takes place within an individual blog. The linkback works very simply. In almost all blog platforms (Word Press, Blogger, etc) there is a field to enter your url (your site address). If you’re comment catches a readers attention, they’ll click on the link and visit your site. Be careful not to post comment spam. There is a need for caution when sharing links in the comment itself. Many bloggers don’t take well to this, as it comes across as a blatant attempt to siphon their traffic to your site. Unless the link you are posting directly answers a question, it's best not to do it. The other benefit to blog commenting, even if you don’t get many direct visitors, is that the search engines see the link and your site gets a small boost. If you post enough comments on enough unique blogs (different domains) then you’ll see a significant boost in traffic.

3. Free Traffic Source: Twitter Traffic

Twitter Traffic: When most users first sign up and start using Twitter it can be hard to see how it could ever bring significant traffic. Over time and with regularity Twitter quickly becomes a principal source of traffic. Many blogs use automation tools to feed links and past posts to their Twitter account. A favorite of mine is called Tweet Old Post. It takes past blog posts and tweets the title and url to your account. Many blogs generate hundreds, even thousands of new visitors every month using this simple WordPress plug-in. Traffic can be boosted by following these 5 Easy Steps to Boost Blog Traffic.

4. Free Traffic Source: eBay

eBay: The concept of using eBay as a sales platform is quite simple. Post a product (often at a loss or at cost) to generate attention and post your url in the description as a source for more information about the product or the subject. Because of the size and traffic on eBay, you’ll reach thousands of new prospects. Other sales platforms to consider: CraigsList and Amazon.

5. Free Traffic Source: Contest Marketing

Contest Marketing: One of the fastest ways to generate non-purchased traffic is to have a contest. It is a great way to generate hundreds of inbound links, as bloggers love to share relevant contests with their readers, being the one to break the news. Many site owners have found it most effective to give away one very large prize, rather than numerous smaller ones. Everyone loves to dream about that huge trip to Europe, rather than the free song download. Big prizes create big results. In addition to the boost of traffic, be sure to require something of the visitors to enter. Consider requiring a simple newsletter subscription. That way you have their contact information should they win, and you also can keep them informed about new content as you publish.

An example of effective contest marketing was a Galapagos Trip for Two given away by Red Mangrove Galapagos Lodges. Contest period was open for a few months, more than 4500 people entered and the winner was drawn on video.

6. Free Traffic Source: Blog Design Adjustments

Blog Design Adjustments: Tweaking your site just a little can make huge differences to your traffic over time. Effective cross-linking, for example, will help Google to index your content, and help your human readers to see what other relevant content you have. Check out these 6 Ways to Boost Blog Traffic - all are design and writing approaches that will boost your ranking. These changes will also make for a better visitor experience and keep your readers on your site longer - which is never a bad thing.

7. Free Traffic Source: Content Aggregators

Content Aggregators: Getting your site (and posts) listed with a top content aggregator can send a flood of traffic. Consider Alltop.com. The benefit of an aggregator (a site that aggregates, or collects blog posts) is that they have a larger and broader readership than you do. By placing links to your content on these popular platforms, you can count on more traffic. But there’s a catch: they don’t accept just any site. While this is great for you when you are accepted, it can be hard to get accepted when your site is still new.

8. Free Traffic Source: Content Syndication

Content Syndication: This is most simply done via a RSS feed. This not only makes it easy for readers to follow your site but also notifies readers immediately upon publishing new content. Its a great way to bring readers back to your site everytime you publish a new piece of content. A popular tool to manage RSS feeds is FeedBurner (by Google).

9. Free Traffic Source: Write Great Content

Write Great Content: Nothing will build your traffic better than great content. Regardless of if it is blog posts, video or audio (or a combination of all three) you need to consistently produce great content. Great content encourages visitors to share your posts - via social media and links on their own sites and blogs. This social sharing by your readers has more weight than any purchased ad could ever carry.

10. Free Traffic Source: Build Your Blog Community
Build Your Blog Community: By taking the time to engage individual readers your site will benefit by increased traffic. An engaged community will happily share your content and refer new visitors to your site. Learn how to Build Your Blog Community.

11. Free Traffic Source: Guest Blogging

Guest Blogging: This is a popular one. But how should you do it? First of all, a guest post should only be done on a popular site (more popular than yours). And it should be your best stuff. A mediocre post will bring mediocre results. Post a compelling piece that adds real value to the site you are contributing to. This will help you get another opportunity to post. And give a lot of thought to your bio line. A well written bio will help motivate readers to click through to your site.

In addition to publishing great guest posts, it’s also important to accept guest posts. This helps widen your base of content and takes some writing pressure off of you. Be sure to publish a clear set of blogging guidelines - this will help reduce the number of low-quality posts that you will receive.

12. Free Traffic Source: Trackbacks

Trackbacks: WordPress (along with many other blogging platforms) has a great feature called trackbacks. What are Trackbacks? When you mention another blog on your site, their blog (if it is also on a supporting platform) will get a notification that they have been mentioned. It creates a linkback for readers to follow. It is an easy and effective way to both share great content and get contextual linkbacks.

13. Free Traffic Source: Video Syndication

Video Syndication: Creating video takes time but is worth the effort. Once the video is created, don’t stop with YouTube. Syndicate your video content with a service like OneLoad (owned by TubeMogul). OneLoad will take your video and share it across numerous platforms. Non-commercial use is free and the next level is $75 per month. Works flawlessly and exposes your message and content to millions more people.

14. Free Traffic Source: Video Tagging

Video Tagging: When you upload your videos, it’s important to take a few minutes to research the best tags for your post. One great way, is to check out similar and popular video posts. You can mirror theirs and thus increase the odds of showing up as a related video on their. This simple approach can increase video views and site traffic many times over.

15. Free Traffic Source: Cool Site of the Day

Cool Site of the Day: This extremely popular site has the power to send a huge amount of traffic to your site, should it be chosen as the Cool Site of the Day. They accept submissions, so if you have a unique site it’s worth the time to submit. If you are accepted you will see thousands of new vistors in a matter of hours.

You may also consider: Video Responses, Video Embedding, Writing Tutorials and using bookmarking sites as effective ways to generate more traffic. Getting traffic is a critical part of starting your online business. (onlinebusiness.about.com)

The Dragon of Indonesia

Komodo is an Indonesian island home to approximately 2,000 people who are mostly descendants of former convicts once exiled here. The island which covers an area of 390km² is part of Komodo National Park and is especially known for its native Komodo Dragon - the world's largest living lizard!

For centuries, a local tradition required feeding the dragons by leaving deer parts behind after a hunt or by sacrificing goats. In the past, the practice maintained a friendly relationship with the animals, which can live for more than 50 years and recognise individual humans. Ancient taboos strictly forbid harming the komodos, which is why they survived here but became extinct elsewhere. In 1995 a US environment protection group began a conservation project designed to create a more natural habitat for the komodos, prohibiting the feeding tradition as well as deer hunting practised by the islanders.

The deer population consequently increased and is now providing the komodos a more self-sufficient and natural hunting ground than in recent history. Still, having become used to being fed, the komodos occasionally prefer to seek out easier prey in the vicinity of human settlements by entering villages and hiding under stilt-houses while awaiting the opportunity to snap passing goat or chicken. At the same time, the animals have become more aggressive towards humans, sometimes resulting in deadly attacks. Nevertheless, the Komodo Dragon remains a symbolic attraction of the island, drawing a large number of visiting tourists, which provides employment and supports the local economy. Komodo Island is not just known its heritage of convicts and fearsome lizards but also for its rich marine life and excellent dive sites. (komodo.asia)

The world's largest Buddhist temple

Borobudur The magnificent Borobudur temple is the world’s biggest Buddhist monument, an ancient site widely considered to be one of the world’s seven wonders. Built in the 9th century during the reign of the Syailendra dynasty, the temple’s design in Gupta architecture reflects India's influence on the region, yet there are enough indigenous scenes and elements incorporated to make Borobudur uniquely Indonesian. This awe inspiring monument is truly a marvel. After a visit here you will understand why it is Indonesia’s most visited tourist attraction and a famous icon of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

Located on the island of Java, the temple sits majestically on a hilltop overlooking lush green fields and distant hills. It covers an enormous area, measuring 123 x 123 meters. The monument is a marvel of design, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The architecture and stonework of this temple has no equal. And it was built without using any kind of cement or mortar! The structure is like a set of massive interlocking Lego blocks held together without any glue.

The temple has remained strong even through ten centuries of neglect. It was rediscovered in 1815, buried under volcanic ash. In the 1970’s the Indonesian Government and UNESCO worked together to restore Borobudur to its former majesty The restoration took eight years to complete and today Borobudur is one of Indonesia and the world’s most valuable treasures. The temple is decorated with stone carvings in bas-relief representing images from the life of Buddha. Commentators claim that this is the largest and most complete ensemble of Buddhist reliefs in the world, unsurpassed in artistic merit.

This monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. The ten levels of the temple symbolize the three divisions of the religion’s cosmic system. As visitors begin their journey at the base of the temple, they make their way to the top of the monument through the three levels of Budhist cosmology, Kamadhatu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). As visitors walk to the top the monument guides the pilgrims past 1,460 narrative relief panels on the wall and the balustrades.

The whole monument itself resembles a giant stupa, but seen from above it forms a mandala. The great stupa at the top of the temple sits 40 meters above the ground. This main dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues seated inside perforated stupa. Historians suggest that the name of Borobudur comes from the Sanskrit ‘Vihara Buddha Uhr’ or the ‘Buddhist monastery on the hill’. (indonesia.travel)

Enjoy the beauty of the temple Cetho

Enjoy the view in the morning, decorated vague white mist covering vague eyes, accompanied pegungungan cool air, and as far as the eye can see, surrounded by tea gardens stretch Kemuning. That's the atmosphere in the temple Cetho. A relic temple Hindu-Bundha kingdom in Indonesia, which has the form of buildings and the relief image is quite strange.

Candi Cetho (Cetho temple) standing at 1,400 meters above sea level, on the western slopes of Mount Lawu, Surakarta (solo), Central Jawa, there stands a exotic temple. These are the archeological remains of the Kingdom of Majapahit and the temple is believed to have supranatural powers within its exotic shape. Built in the 15th century, Candi Cetho (Temple) is a Hindu fertility temple on the slopes of the mount Lawu. Located in the hamlet of Cetho Village Karangayar District. In Java language, Cetho means clear or pure.

It stands on the hill with beautiful view and surrounded by tea plantation. This temple has its own speciality it is different with any other temple exixted in Central Java. In order to get to this temple, we must go to a high through tea plantation and forest. Archeologists say when the temple was found by one of their Dutch predecessors in 1842, there were about 14 levels (courtyards). But, in the 1970s the temple was restored by people entrusted with the task by President Soeharto and their work was based on mystical concepts and so now there are only 9 terraces.

Cetho Temple is an ancient heritage of last Hindus period in Indonesia. The building shape on each terrace is unique. Spatial alteration meaning of the temples is manifested by the difference on the building shape and ceremonial religious activities. The air is cool up here at 1,400 metres and there is a spectacular panorama. It is even more beautiful in the evening when Karanganyar and Surakarta are bathed in colourful lights. The Temple complex is used by local residents who are hindus as a place of worship and popular as a sanctuary for those in the original religion of java / javanese beliefs (kejawen). The relationship between Alexa and Your Blog

When you first start to blog, you are excited about sharing your thoughts, feelings, reviews and opinions with the world. But it doesn't take long before you realize that all of your hard work is for nothing if no one can ever find your articles and read them. Most bloggers come to that time when they realize they have to be more aggressive in recruiting readers and getting their numbers up. That’s when many bloggers start doing Google searches for ‘how to grow their blog’ or ‘ways to get more readers’. The Google results are unlimited on this subject. Here are some tips for those bloggers who are ready to take it to the next level.

Alexa BlogAlexa and your Blog
There are several determining factors that companies use to determine the value of a blog. One of those factors is the Alexa Ranking. The Aexa number for most blogs begins in the millions and begins to shrink until it finally gets in the 100,000 range. It continues to get smaller as the blog grows and gains more readers.

What is Alexa?

Alexa is simply a system by which blogs and websites are ranked according to the amount of traffic that comes to those blogs on a regular basis. You must download a toolbar (IE) or install the extension (Chrome) in order to have your Alexa number affected. The downside of Alexa is that it only measures the traffic that comes from computers that have the Alexa toolbar or extension installed. Some companies devalue the Alexa number because it does not give a clear indicator of all traffic- just traffic that comes from computers with the toolbar or extension installed. Even though Alexa is not the ultimate determining factor of the worth of a blog, it is still an important factor. Any blogger who is serious about growing their blog should install the Alexa toolbar or extension on chrome or Firefox.

The downside of Alexa

Bloggers who have been watching their Alexa score for a long period of time know that they often begin to base the value of their blog on the Alexa toolbar number. We all have to remember that we are more than our Alexa number! The number will change daily and fluctuate regularly. As long as you are still seeing long term growth, you can relax and know that your blog is good - even if your number is not what you are wanting it to be.

How can you make your Alexa Number smaller?

The number one way to make your Alexa number smaller is to make sure you are writing quality, original posts that people want to visit. The number will get lower as your blog grows. It is also helpful to join other like minded bloggers who can help support your blog by visiting and promoting your hard work. There is no magic way to get to the magic Alexa number you are aiming for. It takes time, hard work and supportive readers. Ways non-bloggers can help If you are a not a blogger but you have a favorite blog that you want to support, why not download the toolbar so your visit will help your favorite blogger's Alexa number go down. Your visit to the blog will cast a vote of support for the blogs you visit! Do you follow your Alexa number? Have you got any tips for building your blog? We'd love to hear!   (athometake2.com)

The Most Beautiful Hindu Temple in the World

Prambanan temple is extraordinarily beautiful building constructed in the tenth century during the reigns of two kings namely Rakai Pikatan and Rakai Balitung. Soaring up to 47 meters (5 meters higher than Borobudur temple), the foundation of this temple has fulfilled the desire of the founder to show Hindu triumph in Java Island. This temple is located 17 kilometers from the city center, among an area that now functions as beautiful park.

There is a legend that Javanese people always tell about this temple. As the story tells, there was a man named Bandung Bondowoso who loved Roro Jonggrang. To refuse his love, Jonggrang asked Bondowoso to make her a temple with 1,000 statues only in one-night time. The request was nearly fulfilled when Jonggrang asked the villagers to pound rice and to set a fire in order to look like morning had broken. Feeling to be cheated, Bondowoso who only completed 999 statues cursed Jonggrang to be the thousandth statue.

Prambanan temple has three main temples in the primary yard, namely Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva temples. Those three temples are symbols of Trimurti in Hindu belief. All of them face to the east. Each main temple has accompanying temple facing to the west, namely Nandini for Shiva, Angsa for Brahma, and Garuda for Vishnu. Besides, there are 2 flank temples, 4 kelir temples and 4 corner temples. In the second area, there are 224 temples.

Entering Shiva temple, the highest temple and is located in the middle, you will find four rooms. One main room contains Shiva statue, while the other three rooms contain the statues of Durga (Shiva's wife), Agastya (Shiva's teacher), and Ganesha (Shiva's son). Durga statue is said to be the statue of Roro Jonggrang in the above legend. In Vishnu temple, to the north of Shiva temple, you will find only one room with Vishnu statue in it. In Brahma temple, to the south of Shiva temple, you find only room as well with Brahma statue in it.

Quite attractive accompanying temple is Garuda temple that is located close to Vishnu temple. This temple keeps a story of half-bird human being named Garuda. Garuda is a mystical bird in Hindu mythology. The figure is of golden body, white face, red wings, with the beak and wings similar to eagle's. It is assumed that the figure is Hindu adaptation of Bennu (means 'rises' or 'shines') that is associated with the god of the Sun or Re in Old Egypt mythology or Phoenix in Old Greek mythology. Garuda succeeded in saving his mother from the curse of Aruna (Garuda's handicapped brother) by stealing Tirta Amerta (the sacred water of the gods).

Its ability to save her mother made many people admire it to the present time and it is used for various purposes. Indonesia uses the bird as the symbol of the country. Other country using the same symbol is Thailand, with the same reason but different form adaptation and appearance. In Thailand, Garuda is known as Krut or Pha Krut.

Prambanan also has panels of relief describing the story of Ramayana. Experts say that the relief is similar to the story of Ramayana that is told orally from generation to generation. Another interesting relief is Kalpataru tree that - in Hindu - the tree is considered tree of life, eternity and environment harmony. In Prambanan, relief of Kalpataru tree is described as flanking a lion. The presence of this tree makes experts consider that Javanese society in the ninth century had wisdom to manage its environment.

Just like Garuda, Kalpataru tree is also used for various purposes. In Indonesia, Kalpataru is used as the logo of Indonesian Environment Institution. Some intellectuals in Bali even develop "Tri Hita Karana" concept for environment conservation by seeing Kalpataru relief in this temple. This tree of life is also seen in the gunungan (the puppet used as an opening of traditional puppet show or wayang kulit). This proves that relief panels in Prambanan have been widely known throughout the world.

If you see the relief in detail, you will see many birds on them; they are real birds as we can see on the earth right now. Relief panels of such birds are so natural that biologists can identify their genus. One of them is the relief of the Yellow-Crest Parrot (Cacatua sulphurea) that cites unanswered question. The reason is that the bird only exists in Masakambing Island, an island in the middle of Java Sea. Then, did the bird exist in Yogyakarta? No body has succeeded in revealing the mystery.

You can discover many more things in Prambanan. You can see relief of Wiracarita Ramayana based on oral tradition. If you feel tired of enjoying the relief, you can take a rest in the beautiful garden in the complex. Since 18 September 2006, you can enter zone 1 area of Prambanan temple. The damage caused by the earthquake on 27 May 2006 is being reconstructed. Please come and enjoy Prambanan temple. (yogyes.com)
